The 3-D TV industry has two problems right now: the glasses and the lack of content. Theres nothing they can do about the glasses. The technology for glasses-free 3-D just isnt there yet. But when it comes to content, the companies involved are deliberately making the problem worse with these exclusives. Eventually, these exclusive arrangements will no doubt expire and the associated movies will be sold to anyone. But this is the critical stage for 3-D adoption, particularly because millions of PS3 owners can now watch 3-D Blu-rays on their consoles and might be considering upgrading their TVs to take advantage. Why are these companies going out of their way to make 3-D even more confusing than it already is? Are they really that short-sighted? Sadly, it sounds like the entire six-part series will only be available as a box set, but yeah, Im gonna get it. And you are, too. Dont even lie. UPDATE: The Redbox public relations people noticed this post and contacted me with some updated info on their Blu-ray plans. Apparently the company is currently testing Blu-ray in some of its kiosks, and the 50 price is a test price. A final price will be announced when the full rollout happens in the second half of this year. I would guess that 50 does end up being the final price since thats what the Redbox president said, but again, it has not been officially confirmed. I was having a discussion with some co-workers just now about whether we ever watch the deleted scenes, directors commentary and other additional content that ships on all DVD and Blu-ray discs these days, as that might be one reason discs are more popular than video-on-demand services that dont include those extra items. I almost never watch any of the extras sometimes the deleted scenes, but my colleague said she and her daughter always watch the deleted scenes.
